Olaf Kolkman is director of NLnet Labs, a not-for-profit research and development group which provides globally recognized innovations and expertise for those technologies that turn a network of networks into an Open Internet for All. NLnet Labs produces open-source products, performs research on technical issues with global impact, and contributes actively to the regional and global multi-stakeholder environment (e.g. ICANN, RIPE, IETF).
He has been actively involved with Internet technologies since his astronomy studies during the early nineties. Internet became his professional focus in 1996.
In 1997 he joined the RIPE NCC where he got involved in the test-traffic project. After being (technical) operations manager he became systems architect and project manager in 2000. He was responsible for DNSSEC deployment at the RIPE NCC and worked with NLnet Labs on the development of their DNS nameserver (NSD). Around 2000 Kolkman got more involved in the DNS community and became active in the IETF in which he volunteered in a number of leadership positions that exposed him to various aspects of Internet governance.
As of 2007 he is the director of NLnet Labs where he evangineers the Open Internet. In particular the use of open standards and technologies, and the development and deployment of technologies that secure the Internet. Within the contexts of NLnet Labs that work is largely focused around providing reliable open source software to achieve better security, particularly in the area of DNSSEC and other core-Internet technology.
He describes himself as an Internet Generalist, with deep knowledge on some of the Internet aspects who particularly enjoys bridging the technology-society-policy gaps.
Olaf Kolkman was chair of the DNS Extensions Working Group between 2003 and 2006. He was appointed IAB member from 2006 to 2012 and was its chair between March 2007 and March 2011. As IAB chair he served as ex-officio member of the IETF Administrative Oversight Committee and the IETF Trust. He was Acting RFC Series Editor between from March to December 2011. He chairs the IAB's IANA Evolution Program, chairs the IETF Weirds working group, and is the IETF/ISOC representative on the European Multi-Stakeholder Platform on ICT Standardisation. He is also a Trusted Community Representative in the context of the DNS Root-Signing ceremony, and an RIPE Arbiter.
Olaf Kolkman was born (1966) and raised in the Netherlands. Olaf is married to Leidi, has two kids and lives in Uithoorn, NL.
